The idea — 01

Every taxpayer is a shareholder. We build the shareholder report.

The public pays for everything a government does, and can see almost none of it. The records exist — enacted budgets, project schedules, delivery data — but they live in thousand-page acts and portals built for specialists. WorksBetter reads a jurisdiction's own records and turns them into a report its owners can actually use.

The craft underneath is unglamorous and hard: parsing enacted law, filing records requests, reconciling every figure against totals the publisher printed itself — and publishing our own corrections in the open. That discipline is the product. Everything else is typography.

We work from the jurisdiction's own documents — enacted acts, financial plans, project schedules, records requests. Primary sources only, each one named and dated on the page.

Reconcile to the dollar

Every figure must agree with totals its own publisher printed — and the checks run on every build, so a number that stops reconciling stops the ship.

Publish, blanks and all

What checks out is published. What the government doesn't publish stays visibly blank, with the reason printed where the figure would be. Then the corrections log keeps us honest.
