What WorksBetter is
WorksBetter is a public benefit corporation. We build one thing: a portal that shows a government's money in plain language. Where it comes from, where it goes, and whether what it paid for got delivered.
The portal is for everyone with a stake in that money. The taxpayer who funds it. The official who has to answer for it. The reporter, the researcher, the watchdog, and the neighbor who wants the real number instead of a talking point. They all read the same page, with the same figures, sourced the same way.
A shareholder in a company has always gotten an annual report on how their money was used. A taxpayer still gets nothing like it. The stakes are their streets, their schools, and their safety. The information is public by law. It is spread across many separate systems, in numbers too large to hold in your head. We put it in one place and make it plain.
Colorado is the first live portal. The same system works for a city, a county, a state, or the federal government. Every one of them has the same problem.
The promise we hold ourselves to
Transparency sites fail in two ways. Some dump raw data nobody can read. Others polish a story nobody should trust. We do neither.
Our rule has a name, The Honesty Framework™. We publish it in full, and the portal itself enforces it. Every number carries one of these four labels.
Sourced from a public record you can open. We name the record and the date we read it. Our only part is finding it and reading it.
A number we computed, with the formula printed next to it. We show our math.
A placeholder, labeled as one, so you can see a page before its real data exists. We never mix it with real figures.
A number nobody has published stays blank, with the reason on file. A “guess dressed up as data” is worse than an empty field.
When we get one wrong, the correction goes in the corrections log. We date it, show the before and after, and leave it there. The log is the site's own audit, made public.
The portal reports. It does not judge. It is nonpartisan, and it never reads, counts, or stores anyone's party.
A team with decades of experience
The team that runs WorksBetter spent years building online systems for companies buried in their own data. They built the portal and the Honesty Framework that it runs on. They run the platform, the data engineering, and operations.
WorksBetter is a Delaware public benefit corporation. Its charter obligates it to a public mission, not only to its stakeholders. That structure is not decoration. It is the legal form of what the portal is for.
Neutral by design
WorksBetter is infrastructure, not an advocate. Organizations become customers of the portal. None of them owns the record, shapes a figure, or appears in it as anything but a user. The site reads the same on any given day, whoever pays for a portal. We built that separation into the system. It holds whoever runs the company.
We keep no record of the people who read the site. There is no account and no cookie. If you ask for the weekly report, we keep your email address. A rating, a comment or an episode answer reaches us without your name or any identifier. Everything else you type stays in your browser. What we measure, we say on our privacy page.
We may publish summaries of what residents tell us about a place. If we ever do, it will be our own writing about what we heard. It will never be your rating, never your comment, and never a count, average or distribution of anybody's.
Where we're headed
Today the portal covers one state, done right: Colorado. Next it is every state, the major cities, and the federal government, so any taxpayer can open their own report, wherever they live.
Colorado gets more features first. You can already rate a project and follow it. A weekly report for your county comes next. Contract detail is public record, and we will publish it when we can do it properly.
